Rushbearing in 1835
So far as Joan can ascertain the Rushbearing in its modern form started in 1832 so this print is the earlist we have of the Rushbearing. This is taken in the market place. Looking closely one can see that the bearings were all big ones and decorated with paper flowers and ribbons. Later on Miss Pedder suggested that real flowers should be used. Also it appears that the smaller children did not have their own bearings to carry.
