The photograph shows Frederick Penriee standing outside his Drapers & Milliners shop in Market Place with a member of staff in the doorway.

Frederick Penrice was one of 11 sons and daughters of Thomas Penrice a well known draper in Wigton. After serving his apprenticeship and training in London he moved to Ambleside and opened his shop in 1919. Several members of the Penrice family shared in the running of the business as it evolved from a general drapers to a Ladieswear and Menswear specialist clothing outfitter until it closed in 1994 having served residents and visitors alike for 75 years.
